Step Towards Healthier Feet
Taking care of your Feet for Life
Whether it’s
forcing them into those oh-so-beautiful shoes that are just a bit too tight or
simply neglecting the most basic of maintenance tasks, sometimes our feet take a
right old battering. As part of the annual Feet for Life month in June,
the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists is raising awareness of all aspects
of foot care and foot health, with a special focus on the issue of Diabetes
and Foot Care.
Over two million
people in the UK are currently living with diabetes*, and recent
statistics have revealed that the number of new cases is soaring. According to
figures, diabetes climbed 74 per cent between 1997 and 2003. By 2005, over four
percent of the population was classified as having some type of diabetes, the
most common being type 2**.
Foot problems
commonly develop in people with diabetes and can quickly become serious. Feet
for Life month aims to make people with diabetes more aware of the risks and
what they can do to prevent them.
Key issues around
diabetes and foot health include:
-
Complications with the
nervous system – diabetics may not be able to feel their feet properly which
mean that cuts and sores can go unnoticed.
-
Damage to blood
vessels and the immune system from diabetes – this can make it difficult for
wounds to heal and they may become infected.
-
In some cases, poor
blood flow means that antibiotics cannot easily get to the site of the
infection. In the worst case scenario, the only treatment for this is
amputation of the foot or leg.
Stephen
Gardiner from
“A Foot Above”® says: “It is essential that diabetics know how
to look after and examine their feet to prevent foot problems before they occur,
recognise any symptoms early, and to ensure they seek the right treatment when
problems do occur.
And it’s not just
people with diabetes who need to take care of their feet; basic foot maintenance
can make your life far more comfortable, and help prevent problems from
developing further down the line.”
This June, why not
head down to “A Foot Above”® and have a foot health check with
a qualified podiatrist? Appointments can be made by calling 0115 9223377
(Beeston Clinic) or 0115 9328832 (Ilkeston Clinic).
Keep looking after
your feet and make sure they take you where you want to go!
