A new Ilkeston business has the remedy for fatigued feet and stressed souls. Former Royal Navy medic Stephen Gardiner, who saw horrors of war in recent conflicts, has turned his attention to Civvy Street where he opens to use his various skills to make life more comfortable. Chiropody clinic A Foot Above opened at 96 Bath Street on Friday, where there will also be workshops and training courses. Stephen put his specialist training in trauma and emergency medicine to good use with the Royal Marines in Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. In between duties he studied and graduated as a sports therapist and surgical chiropodist and treated the famous Royal Naval Field Gun display teams and service personnel training for top sporting events. But he opted to leave service life and set up his won business with help from Erewash Partnership and the Royal British Legion. The premises have a reception and waiting room and two therapy rooms - one will deal with massage, reflexology, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, sports injuries, and hopi ear candle treatment. The other will be used for chiropody and biomechanics, the assessment and fitting of supports for various problems. Stephen, a registered Chiropodist, will make home visits to the housebound or people with mobility problems and deal with sports injuries and acupuncture. Colleague Jason Fletcher will practice hypnotherapy and other complementary therapies. There will also be various in-house first aid courses for companies to train workers and bring others up to date so they comply with new health and safety regulations and standards that come into effect in August. A Foot Above is trying to organise courses for shops in Erewash to give resuscitation skills for employees and customers alike. As a member of the Health Professions Council that regulates practitioners of 13 health professions, Stephen also offers courses in life saving and emergency first aid for sports. "It is important because a few minutes of vital attention can mean the difference between life and death," said Stephen. "I believe we are the only private walk-in clinic of its type in the East Midlands that also offers corporate work and training." The Clinic was officially opened by Mayor and Mayoress of Erewash, Cllr Mike Wallis and Margaret Wallis. In attendance were Managing Director Stephen Gardiner, Mrs Eileen Gardiner and Hypnotherapist Jason Fletcher. Ilkeston Advertiser |
