How to care for your feet this winter

Cold weather can take its toll on your feet, so ensure they are the centre of your attention this winter.

When you think about how much time we spend on our feet, it’s hardly surprising that winter and a night out can leave them feeling tired, bruised and battered.

Most of us are guilty of neglecting our feet and often gaze in dismay when we take off our socks. We are especially prone to letting our foot care routine lapse during the cold winter months when we just want to bundle them up in fluffy socks and big boots.

Stephen Gardiner AChS, a Qualified and HPC Registered (CH20594) Chiropodist/Podiatrist said "The big thing is that with the onset of winter is that people go from a summer sandal to a more enclosed shoe.  The biggest problem people face is that their shoes do not always fit properly”.

"It is more important that you have a good, sensible fit for your everyday shoes. If you have correctly fitting shoes, fewer problems will develop with your feet and toes."

Stephen recommends that the same pair of shoes are not worn every day.

The most common problems in winter are dry, cracked skin and chilblains. The answer is to moisturise regularly. Stephen says “It should be done at least once a day using a good quality cream, although it doesn't have to be specifically designed for feet”. Stephen recommends keeping a pot by the bed and applying it at night.

"Some people put socks on afterwards so the cream doesn't go on the bed clothes and because it makes it easier for the cream to be absorbed" he said. "There is nothing wrong with wearing socks at night for whatever reason, as long as they are clean."

The most important thing to remember in foot care is to maintain a steady temperature and not to expose your feet to extreme heat or cold.  "If you are going outside in the winter, even if it is just to put something in the dustbin, make sure you have shoes and socks on," said Stephen. “It is also important to only put on dry footwear. Athletes Foot and Fungal Nail infections are common conditions exacerbated by damp conditions.”

Lastly, he recommends adding a HPC Registered Chiropodist to your address book. He advises that visiting a Chiropodist will often save you problems in the long run. "The most important thing to do is to maintain your foot care. If you visit a qualified Chiropodist and they get your feet into shape, then it’s easier for you to maintain their condition," he said.

Stephen says Chiropodists must be registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and will have a certificate and ID card bearing their name and registration number - this will start with the letters CH. If they do not have these details, then they may not be registered and qualified to legally call themselves a Chiropodist.
